Gary Williams’ Personal Testimony

“Time and Motion”

One of the things that Fred Williams taught me was the importance of hard work.  I always remember him keeping us busy doing chores and projects around the house.  My father was always focused on doing things efficiently and effectively.  He drilled the line into our heads “time and motion”, meaning to do things in a way that saves the most time and motion.  That thought has stuck with me through my business career.

I attended a military school in Baltimore, which continued to help me formulate a strong work ethic and leadership skills.  However, when it came to college, my focus became very distracted on the pleasures of life.  My work ethic suffered because of this.  Fortunately, I was able to keep enough focus to graduate with a degree in business.  Looking back, I wish I had spent more time learning and less time playing.

I have always enjoyed playing guitar and singing so I thought that was going to be my life’s direction.  After spending some time in a band, I realized that putting my dependence on three or four other guys was not a good idea.  I went back to work for my father in his hotel and worked as many positions as I could. Let’s just say, I was not a very motivated pot washer!
The girl that I had been dating through college ended our relationship.  This event, in particular, caused me to reevaluate my priorities and focus.  At this point, I decided to make the hotel business my career and give it one hundred percent of my effort.  From personal observations, it was clear that the employees in my dad’s hotel were not treated very well by their supervisors.  I made the decision that I would work hard enough to one day affect change in the attitude of management toward the staff.  This one fact became my core business focus, and it still is today.

I started to succeed at work and became more and more confident in my leadership and administrative abilities.  I took some courses in sales and realized that this was also one of my strengths.  I became financially stable with a good job, my own house, a new car, and money in the bank.  I also was dating and living with a wonderful girl who was beautiful inside and out.  To me, this meant that I had it made.  Then, as soon as I had put it all together, I began asking myself serious questions such as: “Is this all that life is for?”, “What is the purpose of life?”, “Are we supposed to just get a lot of things, money, and then die?”  Questions like these started popping in and out of my mind during the fall of 1980.

Fortunately, my grandmother had given me a paraphrased version of the Bible called, “The Living Bible” two years before.  I was not interested in God in the slightest. To be perfectly frank, I didn’t want to have anything to do with Him.  My grandmother had told me many times that I was on my way to an unpleasant place unless I changed my ways.  I didn’t take her seriously.  One night, while questioning myself, I spotted the Bible.  I thought to myself, “I’ll read this thing and get my grandmother off my back.”  I was a complete skeptic.  Beginning with Genesis, I began to read.  The more I read, the more interested I became.  When I got to the book of Proverbs, I thought it was written just for me.  I had never read a book like that.  I also didn’t immediately accept this as truth.  As any soul-searching person would do, I started investigating other religions.  The closer I looked and the more I read, the more I came to believe that the Bible really is God’s written Word.

Big changes started happening in my life.  I started attending a church and broke up with my live-in girlfriend.  Something inside of me was telling me that I had to clean up my act.  I was incapable of doing this until I made a decision one day to put my trust in Jesus Christ as my living Savior.  I concluded that my grandmother was right; I was not heading in the right direction.  Through the Bible, I found out that it is God’s desire for all of us to have eternal life.  He wants us to live eternally with Him in heaven when our physical bodies die.

The Bible taught me that God loves us so much that He sent his only begotten Son to die on the cross for us, and raised Him from the dead as payment for our sins.  It also taught me that God offers us eternal life in heaven if we will simply put our trust and faith in Him.  My understanding and accepting this was a big step for me.  After evaluating the options, my conclusion was that this was the only logical and viable option available.

I made the decision to accept Jesus Christ as my Savior and I have never, ever looked back or questioned that decision.  It was simply the best decision I ever made in my entire life.  I have since learned that my purpose and focus in life is to serve God and man.  When I die, I won’t take any buildings, bank accounts, or business transactions with me.  All of that will go to someone else; hopefully, to my wife and kids and not the government.  What I can take with me is people.  If you have questions about my story, send me an e-mail at gwilliams@cwhotels.com.  I will call you back and answer any question that you have.  It would be my privilege to help you and answer any of your questions.

Where does Coakley & Williams Hotel Management Company fit into all of this, and why is this on our web page?  First of all, this is really not my company; it belongs to God.  I ask Him every day to show me what He wants to do with His company.  I seek His guidance daily in every decision I make.  I wish I could say that everything is perfect, but I can’t.  What I can say is that I have seen God constantly protect me and this company through some very difficult times.  Over the years, I have grown to trust Him completely.  I have learned not to worry very much because He is in charge.  The purpose of this company is to ultimately serve and honor Him.  I believe we do this every time we give great service, do things right, maintain honesty, embellish integrity, and demonstrate love in the workplace.  We are here to provide a great work environment for our employees and to do our very best to provide paychecks for them and their families.  We are also here to give the absolute best service possible to all of the owners and investors in all of the hotels and related facilities that we manage.  The ultimate purpose of this company is to serve everyone with whom we come into contact with. Through this example, we hope to glorify God.

When I think about the direction my dad gave me about “time and motion”, I am reminded that time is slipping away.  My eternal destiny is secure.  I know I’m going to heaven when I die.  The ultimate time and motion saver for me was accepting the gift of eternal life that I believe God provided for all of us.  There, we’ll have all the time we want to do whatever we want.  I hope to see you there.  By the way, the woman I broke up with ultimately accepted Christ as her Savior and I asked her to marry me.  We have been married since 1981.  We have two wonderful children who also know and serve our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  I am a blessed man.
